Responsibility

Actively Shaping Society

Responsibility

Blick auf einen Gemeischaftskarten mit dem Schriftzug "Vaduz"

Responsibility means acting consciously toward people, the environment and future generations. As a Topic in Focus, responsibility is deeply embedded at the University of Liechtenstein. It shapes not only the content of research and teaching, but also the university’s dialogue with society. Responsibility is not an abstract concept, but a lived attitude in both academic work and everyday practice.

Responsibility means making conscious decisions, standing by them and acting in an ethical, transparent and sustainable way."
Prof. Dr. Marco Furtner, Professor for Entrepreneurship and Leadership

Responsibility in Research and Knowledge Transfer

Responsibility forms the foundation of numerous research priorities from sustainable development and questions of business ethics to responsible digital transformation. The university fosters innovative approaches to address current and future challenges with foresight and integrity.

Interdisciplinary teams develop solutions that meet social, ecological and economic demands both in the regional context of the Alpine Rhine Valley and on a global scale. In this way, research becomes responsible and impactful.

For me, responsibility is a core principle in the education of architecture students and in our research. I encourage students to reflect on the ecological, social and societal impacts of their projects. It is especially important to me that they develop their own projects — ones that address real needs and create tangible societal impact, often beyond commercial interests."

Funding Instruments

The University of Liechtenstein employs a broad range of funding instruments to enable excellent research and innovative projects. In addition to the basic funding of professorships, third-party funding plays a key role in strengthening scientific research.

The Research Promotion Fund (FFF) is the University of Liechtenstein’s central internal funding instrument for supporting research activities. In 2024, a total of 41 projects received funding — the majority of them initiated by early-career researchers. In addition to standard project funding, the FFF provides support for grant application preparation and covers funding gaps in third-party funded projects. The Young Talents Programme is specifically aimed at doctoral candidates with their own research initiatives.

The EEA Grants aim to reduce economic and social disparities in Europe. For Liechtenstein, the focus is on the fields of education and culture. This funding contributes to strengthening international competitiveness and creates new opportunities for cooperation.

Creating Impact Through Knowledge

Knowledge and Technology Transfer

The University of Liechtenstein is actively engaged in knowledge and technology transfer, applying scientific findings in collaboration with businesses, associations, public authorities, municipalities, and civil society.

Innosuisse projects play a particularly important role in this area. They enable companies from Liechtenstein and Switzerland to realise innovation projects together with the University of Liechtenstein, based on academic expertise and supported by public funding.

In the field of architecture and spatial development, so-called KTT projects are carried out in cooperation with municipalities, government agencies, and foundations, providing concrete solutions to questions of construction technology and spatial design. In addition, researchers at the University of Liechtenstein offer research services in the form of commissioned studies, surveys, and legal opinions.
