Team led by Oscar Buson selected for international urban design project

Architect and lecturer at the University of Liechtenstein joins international future project “Quartiers de demain” launched by the French government

Oscar Buson, architect and lecturer in practice at the Liechtenstein School of Architecture in the Urban Design & Spatial Development Unit, is participating with his office Raum404 in a major European architecture project: Quartiers de demain. The competition, initiated by French President Macron, aims to explore new approaches to urban development and was officially presented in March 2025 at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris.

From 492 national and international submissions, 30 interdisciplinary teams were selected – among them Raum404, led by Oscar Buson, alongside renowned practices such as Studio Gang (USA), Dominique Perrault (FR), and 51N4E (BE), as well as academic partners including ETH Zurich and Harvard University. The project’s objective is to develop forward-looking urban visions supporting the social and ecological transformation of urban districts, with a strong focus on sustainability, quality of life, and participation.

A site with potential: Le Mans, Quartier des Sablons

The Raum404 team is working at one of the ten selected project sites: the Quartier Les Sablons in Le Mans – a representative example of modern urban planning facing social challenges. Together with two other interdisciplinary teams, Raum404 aims to activate existing potentials, demonstrate new pathways for district development, and involve local residents actively in the design process.

The concepts are being refined through an innovative dialogue process, engaging closely with residents, local authorities, and experts. Starting in May 2025, all ten sites launched so-called “Manufakturen” – open workshops for co-creation. A national gathering followed in June in Paris.

“It is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute within this international context – and at the same time to make the University of Liechtenstein visible.”
Oscar Buson

Presentation to the President and exhibition in Paris

The teams’ results were presented to the French government in November 2025 and will be exhibited from December 2025 to March 2026 at the Cité de l’Architecture, Palais du Trocadéro, in Paris.

Implementation of the projects is scheduled to begin in 2026.

The University of Liechtenstein congratulates Sophie Hartl on the successful defense of her dissertation titled “Explaining and Understanding Organizational Dynamics Using Digital Trace Data.”

How do organizations change in the digital age, and how can these processes be made visible? This was the question Sophie Hartl explored in her dissertation under Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke at the Department of Information Systems at the University of Liechtenstein. The focus of the work is on the potential of digital trace data—process data from IT systems—for analyzing organizational dynamics.

Based on five scientific studies, Hartl developed structured methodological approaches to identify, interpret, and better understand changes in processes. The research combines computer-based analyses with context-specific, theory-based insights.

The findings provide new insights into how IT-driven changes influence process flows, which contextual factors should be considered in process analysis, and how data-based foundations for decision-making can be created. The work thus makes an important contribution to research in the field of process science and supports organizations in dealing with digital transformation.

The University warmly congratulates Sophie Hartl on the successful defense of her dissertation and thanks her supervisor Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke, co-supervisor Prof. Dr. Martin Matzner from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, as well as the chair of the defense committee Prof. Dr. Leo Brecht for their valuable support.

Digital Traces as the Key to Process Design – Outstanding Dissertation by Gregor Kipping

Digital Traces as the Key to Process Design – Outstanding Dissertation by Gregor Kipping

Vier Männer in formeller Kleidung stehen lächelnd auf einer Holztreppe in einem modernen Gebäude.

The University of Liechtenstein warmly congratulates Gregor Kipping on the successful defense of his dissertation, “Advancing Process Science – Leveraging Multiple Sources of Data in Business Process Management”, which was awarded the highest distinction.

How can socio-technical processes be better understood and designed using data in order to address complex challenges in the digital age? This was the focus of Gregor Kipping’s dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke at the University of Liechtenstein. The work centers on the contribution of digital data sources to the evidence-based design of socio-technical processes and systems, as well as process-based behavioral visibility, which makes it possible to gain insights into actual workflows from digital traces and use them for management decisions.

Based on ten scientific studies, methodological and conceptual foundations were developed to demonstrate how digital trace data, sensor information, and educational data can be integrated into design processes. As one of the first contributions in the field of information systems, the work takes an explicitly socio-technical perspective on digital credentials. The focus is not only on the technological infrastructure of such credentials but also on their integration into organizational processes, governance structures, and digital learning ecosystems. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the dissertation expands the discourse on lifelong learning processes and the role of digital credentials by adding a design-oriented perspective.

The results provide fresh impetus for the advancement of the interdisciplinary research field of process science and demonstrate how problem-solving can be understood and systematically supported as a dynamic design process. In doing so, the dissertation contributes to the digital transformation of organizations and the development of educational technologies.

The University congratulates Gregor Kipping and expresses its heartfelt thanks to his supervisor Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke, co-supervisor Prof. Dr. Axel Winkelmann from the University of Würzburg, as well as Prof. Dr. Leo Brecht as chair of the defense committee, for their tremendous support.

Architecture in Motion: How the Base Camp Continues to Create Spaces

Architecture in Motion: How the Base Camp Continues to Create Spaces

The Base Camp of the University of Liechtenstein looks back on an impressive journey – from a former research container in the FLUIDGLASS project to a mobile, modular platform for exchange, participation, and temporary urban development.

At present, the Base Camp is being used by the city of Dornbirn as a temporary home for the FC Admira Dornbirn, after the club’s building was destroyed by fire. The sale to the city of Dornbirn was accompanied by Wolfgang Schwarzmann.

But this is just the beginning: the city of Dornbirn also plans to use the Base Camp for various participatory urban development projects in the future – such as citizen participation processes, temporary dialogue spaces, or mobile project offices in public spaces.

From research to a real-world laboratory platform

The Base Camp has its origins in the EU research project FLUIDGLASS and was fundamentally rebuilt as an upcycling project by students at the University of Liechtenstein in close collaboration with the carpentry firm Frommelt. As part of a seminar week led by Martin Mackowitz, Robert Mair, and Wolfgang Schwarzmann, the students transformed the original shipping container into a modular, adaptable space suitable for a wide range of social formats – from workshops to concerts to public discussion forums.

Implementation began with student prototypes. In the workshops of the Frommelt carpentry firm, the majority of the construction was developed, cut, screwed together, and assembled by the students. In this way, parts of a research station were skillfully repurposed into a place for design, participation, and communication.

Locations and milestones

2018–2019: The Base Camp served as a mobile living room as part of the “Schaffarei” festival organized by the Chamber of Labor Vorarlberg. In five municipalities in Vorarlberg, it addressed the future of work – as a space for dialogue, exchange, and cultural interventions.

Autumn 2019: Under the direction of Prof. Anne Brandl, the Base Camp appeared as the “Vadozner Huus” on the deck of the Marktplatzgarage in Vaduz (September 11–28). In cooperation with the municipality of Vaduz, the Base Camp was used as an open platform for perception walks, discussions, and social encounters – a temporary place to linger, experience, and co-create.

2020–2024: The Base Camp was used for university workshops and design projects at the University of Liechtenstein – as a mobile real-world laboratory and a constructive vessel for architectural and social experimentation.

Since 2025: After the fire at the FC Admira Dornbirn clubhouse, the city of Dornbirn has provided the Base Camp as a temporary clubhouse. In the future, it will also be used in Dornbirn for participation formats, mobile city offices, or experimental urban projects.

A versatile spatial experiment with a future

The Base Camp is a vibrant example of circular construction, participatory urban design, and interdisciplinary learning. What began as a container has, through student initiative, creative vision, and social engagement, become a platform for change – demonstrating how architectural ideas can be mobilized, made effective, and carried forward sustainably.

"We plan, we puzzle, and we discuss a lot … but the chronology of this project has exceeded our expectations on several levels. In addition to the initial reuse – from ‘FluidGlass’ to ‘BaseCamp’ – we also managed to give it another life as the ‘Vadozner Huus’ and as a workshop space at the university.

The fact that we are now, once again, creating added value in Dornbirn with this ‘tool for the development of urban spaces’ far exceeds our expectations. At the same time, it shows that the long-term multiple use of objects, things, and spaces must be repeatedly realigned and directed toward current needs.

It is only through a fundamentally flexible infrastructure and a bit of energy in adapting a structure that one can see how long a concept or project can be kept in use. We are curious to see where the BaseCamp can be spotted in future applications by the city of Dornbirn."

Dr. iur. Manuel Walser, LL.M., Walser Rechtsanwälte AG, explained in his keynote speech: “I would like to leave you with a quote from Peter Drucker, a pioneer of modern management theory: ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it.’ Approach it with courage, knowledge, and diligence, and I am certain you will find success and—at least as important—enjoyment and fulfillment in what you do. And if you happen to make a mistake or take a decision which, in hindsight, turns out to have been wrong, it is still a hundred times better than having done nothing at all.”
